Editorial policy

Contour & Compass aims to make careful, readable work about maps, navigation, and geography. Our editorial choices favour clarity, relevant context, and a visible distinction between fact and interpretation.

Accuracy and context

We check names, terminology, and factual claims against appropriate materials before publication, and we avoid presenting a map as a complete or neutral picture of a place. Where a claim is uncertain or a map's limits matter, the article should say so. General editorial coverage is not a substitute for checking current local conditions, official directions, or safety information before travelling.

Independence

Editorial decisions are made for the reader, not to secure a sale or partnership. A commercial relationship does not buy favourable coverage, and a partner cannot approve independent editorial conclusions. If a relationship could reasonably affect how a piece is read, we make it clear.

Corrections

If you spot an error, use the Contact page and include the article title and the detail in question. We review correction requests and update material when warranted. Significant changes are identified in the article so readers can understand what changed; minor edits for clarity may not need a separate notice.

Partner material and illustrations

Paid or partner-supported material is labelled clearly where readers encounter it and kept distinct from independent editorial work. Some illustrations may be generated with AI. When that is the case, we identify the illustration as AI-generated and do not present it as documentary evidence or a real map of a place.
